Initiative EUROPE DIRECT Rijeka and our agency, Rijeka successfully hosted two events promoting EU programmes and initiatives during 16 and 17 March – the ‘EU Single Market Tour’ and the ‘Europa.Coffee Tour!’.
Rijeka has made the best use of the fact that it has become the only European city to host these two traveling events at the same time, so many Rijeka women and citizens have actively participated in the interactive events offered by the "Shipping the EU Single Market" event, while on Sunday 17 March, as part of the Alpine-Adriatic part of the "Europe.Coffe Tour!", more than 200 coffees were distributed to our fellow citizens. During the two-day programme, more than 1,000 citizens stopped and asked their question about the European Union or gave their comment.
During the two days of the "Shipping the EU Single Market" event, we discussed all the benefits that the EU Single Market It also brings what it means to our daily lives. Through numerous interactive content, quizzes, tests and games, citizens got acquainted with the possibilities that are available to them every day, when they go on a trip to another country, when they want to move to another country and with a number of other possibilities that they are often unaware of themselves. In addition to winning numerous awards, our fellow citizens also showed enviable knowledge about the European Union, its institutions, its activities and activities.
On Sunday, 17 March, as part of the "Europe.Coffe Tour!", the citizens of Rijeka and Rijeka, together with free coffee, discussed the European Union, its current state and presented their ideas for a better common future for all EU citizens.
The European Union has over 447 million citizens and 23 million businesses, and it is essential that our fellow citizens are also informed about all the benefits, opportunities and benefits of living in the European Union and how they can use them for a better life and future. The EU single market brings more products on shelves in shops, these products must meet certain quality standards set throughout the Union, entrepreneurs can more easily internationalise their business. Also, when travelling to an EU member state, as part of "roam like at home", mobile services can be used like at home, the European Health Insurance Card allows the use of necessary health services under the same conditions as for citizens of that country…
By means of EUROPE DIRECT Rijeka and the Rijeka Development Agency Porin, Rijeka will host two unique events this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, March 16th and 17th, promote individual programmes and initiatives of the European Union.

With over 447 million citizens and 23 million businesses, the EU single market is proud to stand out as the largest single market in the world. Today, as we mark its 30th anniversary, we have the opportunity to reflect on the results achieved and face new challenges. Over the past three decades, the EU single market has allowed people, goods, services and capital to move freely within the borders of the European Union. It is not only an achievement for itself, but one of the greatest achievements of the European Union that has strengthened its position in the global economy. It's amazing to know that there are 15% world trade in goods comes from the EU.
Citizens of the European Union can now study, live, shop, work and retire in any Member State, while enjoying products from all over Europe. However, it is important to continuously improve and improve the functioning of the Single Market, given its key role in addressing current and future challenges in Europe.
Both days will be enriched with interactive installations that will allow you to discover how the EU Single Market affects your lives. There are also various activities, games, photo shoot opportunities and prizes you can win!

How many women are really equal in society today and what can be done to improve their position?
This is the main topic Women’s Weekenda, a conference held from 7 to 10 March 2024 in the premises of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Art Quarter in Rijeka.
The conference is an opportunity to bring together and share experiences, inspiration and support among women of different fields of activity. During the full three days, inspirational lectures, interactive workshops and panel discussions were organized, creating space for learning and growth. The conference will bring together prominent names of the regional and world scene with the aim of contributing to the strengthening of women's equality.
Representation of the European Commission in Croatia in cooperation with the University of Rijeka this year’s partner of the ‘Women’s Weekend’ conference is the half-day programme Thursday 7 March 2024free.The theme is “For a Europe of gender equality”, and socializing takes place in MMSU in Rijeka from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.. This "Day Zero" focuses in substance and thematically on the European Commission's achievements in the field of equality. It includes discussions dedicated to the issue of equality from a scientific, economic, media, but also diplomatic perspective, and will also address women's entrepreneurship with a particular focus on work-life balance.
Visitors will have the opportunity to hear the presentations and reviews of the Head of the European Commission Representation in Croatia (v.d) and the Head of the Media Andreja Čović Vidović, Head of the Communication Team of the Representation Carmen Gruber, on NextGenerationEU and senior economic advisers in the Commission Representation Judite Cuculić Župa i Hana Huzjak.
On behalf of the University of Rijeka speak prof. dr. sc. Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Rector of the University of Rijeka, Assoc. prof. dr. sc. Adrijana Martinović the Chair of European Public Law, prof. dr. sc. Sanja Barić, Head of the Chair of Constitutional Law, Assoc. prof. dr. sc. Dalida Rittos the Department of Criminal Law, as well as Daria Glavan Šćulac, dipl. iur., Faculty of Law, University of Rijeka; Assoc. prof. dr. sc. Ana Marija Sikirić Simčič from the Faculty of Economics and dr. sc. Brigitta Miloš, from the Center for Women's Studies of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka. In front of the Polytechnic of PAR from Rijeka, the discussions will be joined by dr. sc. Gordana Nikolić.
Diana Keson, Deputy Ombudswoman and Kristijan Kevešević, Deputy Ombudswoman for Gender Equality, will speak on behalf of the Ombudsmen's Institutions of the Republic of Croatia, and the audience will also be addressed by Tarja Krehić as a representative of the Croatian Association of Women in the Legal Profession, while Danica Kragic Jensfelt, robotic and AI professor, talk about gender issues in the field of artificial intelligence.
The event will be complemented by H.E.’s perspective on gender equality. William de Baets, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Croatia, and H.E. Jessica Blitt, the Ambassador of Canada to Croatia, and the discussions are moderated Nevena Rendelli, Ida Prester i Petar Štefanić.
Except in the holiday season, this sixth edition of the traditional event Torpedo Days, passed in spirit green transition!
Through the two-hour program Torpedo Days 06, as many as 8 local initiatives launched by public and private sector actors were presented. Although different profiles, all lecturers are linked through the same topics and goals: energy efficiency, circular economy, energy savings and sustainable development. This edition of Torpedo Days we organized with the City of Rijeka, Smart Rithe Center EUROPE DIRECT Rijeka.
The participants of the event, in the filled hall of the Torpedo Production Park, could hear what is being done in the wider Rijeka area in terms of waste separation, development of energy communities, energy management, savings and bill reduction, application of green solutions in shipbuilding, development of green startup and many others.
Ana Jerković from EUROPE DIRECT Rijeka introductoryly mentioned the obvious presence of climate change and extreme weather conditions to which we are also exposed in Rijeka. In addition to climate change, rising energy costs and energy insecurity have also spurred the creation of the European Green Deal and its RePowerEU part, which aim to boost the economy through green technology and reduce dependence on fossil fuels through the clean energy transition. And the New European Bauhaus initiative was also launched to maximise the involvement of citizens in the green transition.

Introductory greetings were also given by the Mayor of the City of Rijeka, Marko Filipović stressing the fact that we are in challenging times of energy uncertainty in which Rijeka continuously and proactively adapts to new standards of resource management.
One of the burning topics, not only in Rijeka but also beyond, was presented by Danijela Matejčić Miletić from the Municipal Society of Cleanliness – efficient and sustainable waste management. Matejčić Miletić spoke about the systematic introduction of ‘Door-to-door waste collection“ which is introduced successively in the Rijeka area by city councils and includes the disposal of waste through individual containers for family houses and through joint containers accessible to residents of multi-apartment buildings. As a valuable initiative of KD Čistoća, which is entering its fifth year of work, Matejčić Miletić also mentioned Rijeka's Riperaj – A functional space where citizens can repair DIY objects and devices free of charge.

Involving citizens in the reflection and work on creating an energy-sustainable environment was the topic of the lecture. Damir Medved from the North Adriatic Energy Community. Presenting the concept of energy communities as a contribution to the fight against energy poverty, Medved touched on the devastating data on the percentage of the population that belongs to the energy poor citizens, both in Europe and in Croatia. The establishment of energy communities based on voluntary and open participation brings environmental, economic or social benefits to members, without generating financial gain. Although regulations are in force on the basis of which it is possible to establish an adequate energy community, and the technological solutions needed for this process are increasingly cheaper and more accessible every day, in practice there are a number of issues related to its legal operational operations, which the North Adriatic Energy Community systematically tries to solve.

Tajana Jukić Neznanović from the City of Rijeka followed up on the issue of rational management of resource consumption and presented a number of initiatives in which the City of Rijeka was officially involved. Since 2009, the City of Rijeka has been a signatory of the European initiative, the Covenant of Mayors, which was launched in 2008 by the European Commission with the aim of involving and supporting mayors in achieving the climate and energy goals of the European Union. In October 2015, two initiatives, the Covenant of Mayors and the Adaptation of Mayors, were officially merged into an initiative. Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. The new initiative supports the achievement of the goal reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, adopting an integrated approach to climate change mitigation and adaptation and ensuring access to secure, sustainable and affordable energy for all.

Suzana Belošević Romac, also from the City of Rijeka presented the project Re-value – a project inspired by the NEB aesthetic approach to sustainability in support of the EU Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities, which took a holistic approach to urban development taking into account not only physical infrastructure but also the well-being of communities while setting the path towards achieving climate neutrality in urban areas.
Rijeka was also a test site for the development of products and services of the CEKOM – Competence Centre for Smart Cities project for 3 years. Although technologically intensive, the CEKOM project for smart cities has continuously worked on educating and involving citizens in its activities. One such activity, aimed at introducing the concept of gamification in encouraging citizens to act responsibly towards energy consumption, was presented by Emira Brkić Karninčić from Smart RI. The project included elementary school students from Rijeka who solved certain problems related to sustainability and ecology with creative challenges.

Along with the City of Rijeka and the University of Rijeka, the emphasis in its development is on sustainable development, so Ida Križaj Leko from DeltaLab-a presented the project the Heavy Campus. The project is part of a wider strategic project of the University of Rijeka aimed at improving infrastructural and human capacities with an emphasis on ensuring sustainable development and green transition and raising the quality of study and student standard at the University.

On the side of the private sector are represented two companies, Lürssen Design Center Kvarner i Dražen Debelić, which presented technological solutions for the green and digital transition of shipbuilding with a focus on the use of green hydrogen as propellant for vessels, and Philip Hatcher, a representative of the company Terra Nera, the second-placed team of the 12th generation Startup Incubator Rijeka, who explained to the gathered how ecology can become a lucrative business.
