European Commission, in close cooperation with the Member States of the European Union, organised a hackathon #EUvsVirus to develop innovative solutions to coronavirus-related challenges. The Hackathon took place from Friday, April 24 to Sunday, April 26, 2020. Rijeka Development Agency Porin is an official partner of this initiative.
The General Purpose of Hackathon match and connect innovators, partners and users across Europe and bring them together to tackle the immediate problems of the crisis in various technological fields. During the 48-hour hackathon period, the competitors jointly developed innovative solutions for high-tech and hardware and software solutions using biotechnology, digital technology, social sciences and other domains in the field of innovation.
The development of prototypes and solutions is envisaged in 6 areas (divided into 37 challenges): Health and life, Business continuity, Social and political cohesion, Work and distance education, Digital finance and more. All 37 challenges can be found at the link https://euvsvirus.org/challenges/. The winning projects will be published on the European Innovation Council (EIC Community Platform) and thus become accessible to end-users (e.g. hospitals, schools, ministries), investors, foundations and will focus on the current funding options of the European Commission. This will be the starting point for longer cooperation between the European Commission and the ecosystem of innovators, producers and drivers across Europe on the corona crisis.

Today the EUvsVirus Award Ceremony The winners were selected from 2,160 great projects with more than 23,000 people working on them. The hackathon jury identified the best solutions to support the European and global coronavirus epidemic, in 37 categories A total of 117 out of 2,160 solutions were awarded: https://euvsvirus.org/results/. Overall more than €100,000 They will be shared with the winners for their hard work and new solutions with the greatest potential to save lives and bring life closer to the global pandemic.
The competition brought together more than 22,000 participants from across Europe and beyond. Croatia was represented by 281 participants. Project ViraTrace is the winner in the Health and Life category for the ‘Real-time Communication and Prevention’ challenge, and a representative of Croatia is also present in the project team. Project BirdBox Croatian companies Poslovna inteligencija ranked among the four best teams in the category Digital Finance for the challenge “Support to the identification of financial deficiencies”. Other winning projects whose teams are made up of representatives of Croatia are: IFFA (Integrated Fast Financial Aid) in the Digital Finance category for the ‘Accelerated access to financial support’ challenge, arts4refugees in the Digital Finance category for the “Support to the digitally excluded” challenge, and Transparency in the category Digital finance for the “Other” challenge.
After EUvsVirus hackathon, all winners will be invited to Matchathon will be held from 22nd to 25th May on the new EIC COVID platform. This online event will help connect award-winning teams with end-users, such as hospitals, and provide access to investors, corporations, foundations and other funding opportunities from across the EU.
